Ngāti Hāua Iwi Trust is seeking a mandate to represent Ngāti Hāua in Treaty settlement negotiations with the Crown. Ngāti Hāua Iwi Trust invites all Ngāti Hāua members to attend mandate hui at:


  • 10 March Novotel Airport Hotel, Auckland 6pm
  • 11 March Te Whare Wananga o Aotearoa,  Hamilton  2.30pm
  • 12 March Ngapuwaiwaha Marae, Taumarunui 10.30am
  • 18 March Rangahaua Marae, Whanganui 11am
  • 19 March Nga Hau e Wha National Marae 11am


The purpose of the hui is to provide information about Crown settlement policy, Ngāti Hāua Iwi Trust and the mandate process; and provide an opportunity to vote on the proposed resolution to mandate Ngāti Hāua Iwi Trust to represent Ngāti Hāua in negotiations with the Crown for the comprehensive settlement of all the historical Treaty claims of Ngāti Hāua.

All Ngāti Hāua iwi members aged between 18 and over will have the opportunity to vote on the Mandate from 10 March 2017 to 5pm on Friday 21 April 2017. NHIT is using an independent election company, electionz.com to conduct the mandate voting process. This will include postal votes, internet voting and casting your vote in person at one of the mandate information hui.

Any members of Ngāti Hāua who are not yet registered, will also have an opportunity to vote by casting a special vote. Special votes will be subject to and only become valid once the NHIT Kāhui Kaumātua committee have validated the whakapapa of the voter. Special vote packs are available from any of the mandate information hui or by contacting the Independent Returning Officer on free phone 0800 666 031 or [email protected].

The Ngāti Hāua Iwi Trust is mandated to represent Ngāti Hāua in negotiations with the Crown for the comprehensive settlement of all historical Treaty of Waitangi claims of Ngāti Hāua.

The mandating hui is the first step in a very long process. Draft Mandate Strategy Submissions

Ngāti Hāua Iwi Trust received five submissions, three in support of the draft Mandate Strategy and two not in support of the draft Mandate Strategy. The last response to submitters was completed by the Crown on 1 February 2017. As of 1 February 2017 Ngāti Hāua Iwi Trust has responded to all submitters.
